Here's some stuff that now works properly:

Notice the new checkbox to cut the repo list down to a sane size?

Notice the new 'All packages' group?

Now we tell you if we add deps!

In other, more interesting news, there's now a new library on the street, libpackagekit-gnome.

This shared library will allow integration with GTK dialogs for the common prompts, gconf for licence preferences and hopefully gnome-keyring for the gpg auth stuff. It basically makes adding software in your GNOME application super trivial. More information and samples to come when I've got some gtk-doc documentation.

Richard.

Very nice work. :)

One minor nitpick though, does dependency info really matter? How are they going to help the user to do the right thing - updating the software?.

There should only be references to to names that are in front of the user somewhere else, like applications names. Maybe some understandable abstraction over core stuff. Further simplification would be a gnome update showing up as a single update ie "Gnome 2.22.1". Instead of 20+ names that end up being 20+ choices to make.

The problem isn't that bad in fedora as it is in debian :( (package splitting).

PS: You only allow livejournal comments.... maybe it's only people with livejournal accounts, that are capable of relevant feedback - but i doubt it ;).

some ideas:

- for the package groups list, the 'all' entry could be separated with a list separator to make it stand out more as being different than the others
- something about the checkbox to turn off source/debug/devel etc on and off in the listview seems off. one thing i mentioned to robin was maybe having a treeview and the main repo being the parent node and source/debug/devel being the children. i get the feeling the checkbox wont be intuitive... no way to know for sure without a usability test maybe
- is the download additional packages dialog going to be scalable? what does ok vs cancel do in this dialog? if there is no difference in effect between hitting either of the two then why hvae two buttons?

We're using a GtkTreeView for the list - do you have any idea how I could add a separator to the list?

Also, we can't have a parent/children layout in the gpk-repo tool as PackageKit has no concept of one repo "belonging" to another. The metric is fragile at best, and I'm not sure if it works if we try to say "this is the main repo, these are children". We could use the repo _id_ as the base in the client tool, although this might just add to the confusion. I'll have a play and see if I can make it so.

>is the download additional packages dialog going to be scalable?

Going to be, but isn't yet. As it's in a shared library, when we fix it in one place, we fix it everywhere.

>what does ok vs cancel do in this dialog?

If you click cancel the transaction is aborted, if you click yes then the extra deps are added to the package set.

I'm going to add the filesize there soon too, as it's a bit insane without that.

Thanks!

Richard.

Hm, I'd rename the okay and cancel then. "Cancel installation" "Install", something like that

What about [Cancel] [Install]?

Having the two installation and install next to each other looked odd.

Take a look at http://library.gnome.org/devel/gtk/stable/GtkTreeView.html#gtk-tree-view-set-row-separator-func
